US-led operation in west killed scores of civilians, president says
President Hamid Karzai has sacked the army general in charge of the west of the country after a military operation which he said had killed more than 89 civilians.
Karzai "orders the immediate removal" of General Jalandar Shah Behnam, head of the corps for western Afghanistan, and a commando commander for "negligence and withholding information", a statement from the president’s office said.
It said more than 89 civilians had been killed in a US-led operation in the western province of Herat on Friday.
The interior ministry previously put the death toll at 76, but an Afghan human rights groups later said the civilian death-toll was as high as 88.
The coalition had originally said that 30 militants were killed in the operation in the Shindand district but later said it would investigate claims of civilian casualties.
The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) said some of its members visited the district on Saturday and found that 15 houses had been destroyed in the operation, which involved air-strikes.
Allegations of civilian casualties sparked violent protests in the district, which saw a police car set on fire, a delivery truck overturned and banners carried with the words "Death to America" written on them.
Karzai appointed a delegation headed by the minister of religious affairs to investigate the civilian death claims. The delegation landed in Shindand on Sunday.
AIHRC said more than 900 civilians had been killed in insurgent attacks and military operations against rebels in the country this year.
